About the Project
Following the success of previous film-scoring workshops the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in association with Filmbase, FÁS Screen Training Ireland and the Contemporary Music Centre plan to bring together the very best in emerging Irish filmmakers and music composers to work on a collaborative project.
Irish filmmakers and composers are being given the opportunity to apply for up to four places on a one-day recording session in RTÉ studios in early 2009. At this session original scores created by the composers for the filmmakers will be performed and recorded by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
By working together on creating an original score for the submitted film projects, this initiative will provide budding filmmakers and composers a valuable opportunity to enhance their skills with hands-on experience in a vital aspect of film post-production. It is also a rare opportunity to have a score composed for and recorded by a full orchestra.
Submissions are currently being invited from filmmakers and composers for this project. The closing date for receipt of submission from Filmmakers is 12 noon Friday 31st of October 2008. Filmmakers should send their submission to Filmbase in Temple Bar. Composers should send their submission to the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO).
Film Applicants
Submitted film projects for the award should require original scored music totaling between three and five minutes. Ideally the film should have a maximum duration of 10 - 12 minutes and should be close to or have completed picture lock. Up to four films will be selected for inclusion in the project. Further information on how to apply is available below, including the application form.
Composer Applicants
Applications from composers who would like to participate in this project are currently being sought. Because of the limited number of places available there are a number of qualifying criteria for those wishing to take part.
- Previous experience of scoring to picture (short film/advertisements etc)
- Proficient music notation ability, preferably training to 3rd level standard.
- The ability to score for full orchestra is essential.
A total of 4 composers will be selected for inclusion in the project.
The chosen filmmakers will be assigned a composer who will score original music for their project during November and December 2008. Completed scores must be submitted to IMRO by 5th January 2009; the work will be performed and recorded by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra early in 2009.
Application Guidelines For Filmmakers:
Please read the following guidelines carefully
Filmmakers are invited to submit a short film or film excerpt from a longer project (eg pilot) for which the selected composers will create up to 3 - 5 minutes max. of original score. All categories of film will be accepted e.g. live-action drama, animation, documentary, experimental, etc).
Ideally, the film projects submitted should be close to completion on editing, but un-sound edited/mixed. The use of temp tracks or "mood music" where score is required would also be useful for illustration purposes.
If projects submitted are not fully picture locked edits, applicants must be in a position to confirm that a fully edited and final version of the film will be available to the composer in November. Projects which cannot meet this deadline are asked not to submit.
Please note:
- Proposals for projects which have not yet been shot will not be accepted.
- Films that have already been fully completed with original score will not be accepted.
Selection Criteria:
In making their decisions, the panel will consider the following criteria:
- The genuine needs of each film for original score
- The impact an orchestral score will have in raising the quality of the film
- The scope of the material to provide a useful opportunity for composers to input creatively with the project
- The potential for each film to contribute to the professional development of the filmmakers and composers involved
