Love Film? For this year’s Valentine’s Day, The Roasted Brown Coffee Shop, located on the first floor of Filmbase, served up a delectable selection Irish short films!

Filmbase were delighted to present three award-winning short films upstairs in Roasted Brown Café for Valentine’s Day. The programme of films includeed two IFTA nominated shorts, Rhinos (dir. Shimmy Marcus) and animation Fear of Flying (dir. Conor Finnegan), together with the Oscar® nominated short film The Crush (dir. Michael Creagh). The screening kicked off at 7pm with a running time of approximately 40 minutes. Roasted Brown Cafe on the first floor at Filmbase was be serving wine and tapas alongside their signature gourmet coffee.

A chance meeting in a park between Dubliner Thomas and German Ingrid sparks an afternoon of unspoken connection and urban wandering. This enchanting encounter will have you looking a little more closely at the strangers around you. Funny, sweet and quirky, Rhinos has already screened at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, the Galway Film Fleadh, Cinefiesta Short Film Festival in Puerto Rico as well as the Calgary Int. Film Festival and was the only Irish short selected to screen at the 27th Brest European Short Film Festival in November.

The Crush

An eight year old schoolboy challenges his teacher’s fiancé to a duel. To the death… This independently funded short follows the story of eight year-old Ardal (played by Oran Creagh) who falls in love with his teacher Miss. Purdy (Olga Wehrly). But heartbreak awaits when he bumps into Miss Purdy and her boyfriend (Rory Keenan) having just bought a very real engagement ring. Devastated and spurned, Ardal challenges Miss. Purdy’s fiancé to a duel – to the death! The film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh and has screened at a number of festivals worldwide including Tribeca and was nominated for an Oscar in the Short Film Live action category in 2011.

Fear of Flying

A small bird with a fear of flying tries to head south for the winter. This hilarious short animation picked up the James Horgan Award for Best Animation at last year’s Galway Film Fleadh. Other festival screenings include Darklight and the LA Irish Shorts Fest to name but a few.
