Calling all filmmakers

Following Brendan Gleeson’s recent endorsement of FilmOffaly, details of the annual FilmOffaly/Filmbase award have just been announced.

Domhnall Gleeson was the first recipient of the FilmOffaly Award in 2009 for Noreen and Brendan, who stars in the film, recently said the FilmOffaly award “makes you stop talking about it, and just do it… everything is there, by hook or by crook or because it is well planned”. The Gleeson’s took a 4 day break while filming Harry Potter to make Noreen in January 2010, which has gone on to win multiple awards, been shown on RTÉ and has over 10,000 hits on YouTube.

The FilmOffaly Award aims to foster filmmaking in the county whilst also promoting Offaly as a location. The award will be given to one successful applicant who will receive €8,000 towards the cost of their production, along with one year’s membership to Filmbase, a 50% discount on equipment hire from Filmbase and their new Vendor Discount Card. Scripts of any style and genre are welcome as long as they are under 20 minutes in duration. The only stipulation is that filming must take place in Offaly in 2014.

Other success stories include Toy Soldiers, the 2011 bursary winner directed by Mike Hayes and written by Matthew Roche, which has had much success, winning at Belfast Film Festival, Galway Film Fleadh and Dublin International Short Film & Music Festival as well as screening at festivals in the US.

All lenses point towards Offaly these days with the county now regularly seeing film and television crews on location. Productions to watch out for in 2014 include The Participants, Our Unfenced Country, Hunter Gatherer and A Nightingale Falling.

The award sees hundreds of applications every year and has become one of the most competitive bursaries in recent years. The deadline for applications is Friday 4th April 2014 and application forms, guidelines and more information can be found online at www.filmoffaly.ie.
