David Keating, critically-acclaimed director and screenwriter of features, documentaries and television, will be joining us for our September #GetIntoFilm talk. As a director, his award-winning films include Wake Wood, The Last of the High Kings and Cherry Tree. His screenwriting credits include the Mike Newell/Jim Sheridan collaboration Into The West.
David is currently based in London and writing a book called Micro Tactics: A Guide to Low, Micro and No-Budget Filmmaking and remainsone of the most versatile and sought after teachers and project mentors in the industry. David has worked with the Irish Film Board to promote the Catalyst Project scheme for emerging Filmmakers, devised and run innovative development workshops for Screen Training Ireland, including Project HotHouse, acted as the Irish representative for the European Equinoxe project; and has worked on multiple occasions with Moonstone, BAFTA, The London Film Academy, the National Film School and the Huston School of Film and Digital Media, amongst others.
David will host the September Get Into Film talk at Filmbase exploring the options open to emerging writers and directors in an industry where it is notoriously difficult to find and create the “first break”.
In an open, practical session David will answer all questions and provide advice for filmmakers based on his experiences in Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Among other topics, the session will cover:
Advice for first time directors
Advice for first time writers
How to identify, or develop, “fundable” projects
What producers need from writers and directors, and how to approach them
Finding your niche and developing a career plan
Focusing on the skills you will need to succeed in your field.
The session is highly recommended for filmmakers who are new to the industry but hoping to develop sustainable, professional careers. It will particularly focus on the needs of writers and directors but will also cover issues of interest and relevance to filmmakers in general.
#GetIntoFilm is an open question series so engagement from the audience in encouraged. David has promised to provide answers and advice on any aspects of the industry that are relevant to the audience present.
