Jameson Dublin International Film Festival - early taste of 2009 programme

Festival Director Grainne Humphreys Releases Early taste of 2009 Programme
12th – 22nd February 2009

The 2008 Cannes Palme D’Or winner, the 2008 Cannes Best Director winner and the much anticipated first feature animation from Cartoon Saloon are just some of the delights in store for the 2009 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. Following hot on the success of the 2008 festival, which saw a stellar line-up of films and talent including Colin Farrell, Charlize Theron and Daniel Day Lewis, 2009 promises to be just as exciting! Whilst you will have to wait until January 21st to discover the full delights of the programme, below are just a few highlights to give you a taster of what’s to come!

Taking place from the 12th – 22nd February, the festival will feature over 130 film screenings from Ireland, Europe and across the world, many of which will be their first and only screening in Ireland. As well as the chance to catch some great movies, the festival holds many non-screening events such as the Dublin City Libraries film quiz, which will see older people pit their film knowledge against each other, the Write Here Write Now screenwriting award in association with Walt Disney Motion Pictures, Q&A sessions and much, much, more.

Jameson Dublin International Film Festival Early Highlights:

The Class (France, 2008)
François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighborhood. Armed with the best intentions, they brace themselves to not let discouragement stop them from trying to give the best education to their students. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom, a microcosm of contemporary France. As amusing and inspiring as the teenaged students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeopardize any teacher’s enthusiasm for the low-paying job. François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods…

The Secret of Kells (Belgium/Ireland/France, 2009)
Adventure, action and danger await 12 year old Brendan who must fight Vikings and a serpent god to find a crystal and complete the legendary Book of Kells. All will be revealed on March 6th, when the illuminated animation of THE SECRET OF KELLS (from the award-winning Director Tomm Moore and the acclaimed producers of SKUNK FU) shines its light in Irish cinemas nationwide.
With voice talent of Brendan Gleeson; Mick Lally and introducing Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney

Three Monkeys (Turkey, 2008)
A family dislocated when small failings blow up into extravagant lies battles against the odds to stay together by covering up the truth… In order to avoid hardship and responsibilities that would otherwise be impossible to endure, the family chooses to ignore the truth, not to see, hear or talk about it. But does playing “Three Monkeys” invalidate the truth of its existence?

Dublin City Public Libraries Older People’s Film Quiz
After the success of last year’s partnership, Dublin City Public Libraries, in association with the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival are delighted to announce a very special film quiz. Libraries across the city, will field teams of three older people (over 55 years) who will compete in the film quiz final on February 7th in Dublin City Library and Archive, Pearse St, Dublin 1.
For more details about this event contact your local library or visit www.dublincitypubliclibraries.ie or the festival website www.jdiff.com

Commenting on these early highlights, Humphreys said:
“After an exciting year of exploring the best in world cinema, the 7th Jameson Dublin International Film Festival programme is almost complete and ready to be unveiled at the programme launch in January. To whet appetites I am delighted to offer a sneak preview of some of the films and events that will take place across the city in February.”

The festival has also launched an exciting new marketing campaign, in which the real stars of the festival, the audience, will be telling us their favourite films, before hopefully discovering a new favourite in the 2009 festival. As the focus of the JDIFF 2008 retrospective, Jonas Mekas, said: ‘film can be very personal…everyone has their own’.

The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival is now in its 7th year, and is one of the foremost cultural events of the year. The 2009 festival will take place from 12th – 22nd February, with tickets going on sale at midnight 21st January at www.jdiff.com and full programme information becoming available at the same time. Christmas Gift Vouchers and Season Tickets are currently available at www.jdiff.com.

In 2008 the festival brought audiences a diverse range of cinematic gems, from gala presentations of In Bruges, There Will be Blood and U2:3D, to films like Dambe: The Mali Project, a Jonas Mekas retrospective and with special guests including Colin Farrell, Daniel Day Lewis, Stuart Townsend, Charlize Theron, Mike Leigh and U2 amongst others.

The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival is grant aided by The Arts Council/ An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
