Winners of the Filmbase/RTE Short Film Award scheme are announced

Filmbase and RTÉ are delighted to announce the winners of the first round of the 2009 Filmbase/RTÉ Short film award scheme. This round was the most competitive yet with over 340 applications being submitted so congratulations to the three winning teams for making it through. All three teams will receive €10,000 along with matching equipment and/or post-production facilities at Filmbase to realize their individual projects.

The winners:

Cold Turkey is written and to be directed by Gavin Keane with producer Ruth Coady on board from Parallel Films. Cold Turkey concerns the misadventures of a frustrated Foley artist, curious children and petrified poultry.

Cured, an unconventional love story with a meaty twist, was written by Louise Ní Fhiannachta and will be directed by Mary Redmond and produced by Laura Ní Cheallaigh.

Windows, which is written and to be directed by Ken Walshe, is the story of a local misfit whose attempts to save a beautiful girl from a ruthless criminal ends in tragedy. Windows will be produced by John Wallace of Blacksheep Productions.

Commenting on the round Jo Schofield, Development Executive at the IPU in RTÉ said “It’s fantastic to see the RTÉ/Filmbase short film award go from strength to strength as it continues to support new and emerging filmmakers. This shortlist was particularly impressive this year and I am delighted with the three teams selected in this round. The winning films promise a range of talent and diversity and I look forward to seeing the final results.”

Alan Fitzpatrick, Filmbase MD added “Filmbase is delighted to see such a hunger for short filmmaking and is keen to see more new talent come to the fore in the rounds to come. We’re extremely proud that this scheme has continued to support the development of filmmakers careers at such a crucial stage and are delighted to say that the latest batch of shorts to come through the scheme are already clocking up festival screenings at home and abroad. We expect the latest three shorts to continue this trend in the coming year.”

The next round of the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Award scheme is the June round and the deadline is fast approaching. All applicants to the scheme must submit their script to Filmbase by Friday 26th of June to be in with a chance to compete for this highly coveted award.
