IFI Ireland on Sunday to present Today is Better Than Two Tomorrows
The IFI’s Ireland on Sunday series presents a beautiful meditation on Buddhist life in Laos.
The IFI’s Ireland on Sunday season will present Today Is Better Than Two Tomorrows, Anna Rodger’s captivating documentary on the friendship and life journey of two boys leaving home to become novice Buddhist monks.
Having stayed with the family as a young backpacker several years previous to the filming Anna Rodgers retraced her journey by slowboat along the Mekong to Laos in 2008 to document eleven year-old Leh and Bo’s journey from their rural village to new lives as novice monks.
Announcing the screening Anna Rodgers commented ‘I’m really looking forward to the screening as part of Ireland on Sunday season. It’s a great platform for new Irish work, and I think that Dublin filmgoers will really respond to a glimpse of a much slower, contemplative pace of life. Due to my background of many years as a researcher, it was very natural for me to spend a long period of time working ‘imbedded’ within another world. I think I have a natural curiosity about other people’s lives, and in Laos I was very passionate about the language and trying to understand the way of life there.’
Gently unfolding like a Buddhist fable, this intimate and meditative film takes us on a journey into a world caught between Eastern heritage and Westernisation. Working with no crew and no translator Rodger’s film draws its strength from its unobtrusive Cinéma vérité style and ability to capture the slow beauty of traditional life in one of the world’s poorest and least developed countries.
The IFI’s Ireland on Sunday is a monthly programme of screenings that showcase recent Irish filmmaking of all disciplines previous to theatrical release, broadcast or gallery exhibition. The screenings are usually accompanied by a Q+A with the filmmaker allowing a sharing of feedback from other filmmakers and the public.
Today is Better Than Two Tomorrows (+ Q&A with Anna Rodgers) will be screened at the IFI on Sunday September 20th 2009 at 12.00pm.
Tickets can be booked in person, by telephone on 01 679 3477 or online at www.ifi.ie.
