Special events at the IFI this November
The IFI gets in to gear for November with a trio of special events; from Architecture, Zidane to the wanderings of the Hobo
Three special events in early November will kick start the month at the IFI. With the arrival of the Hobo Film Festival, the IFI will go on a cinematic wandering across the railroads of America; an evening of two Phillipe Parreno films will attract fans of the visual artist as well as admirers of Zinédine Zidane, and finally Dustin Hoffman narrates Visual Acoustics – a new documentary about Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer.
The Hobo Film Festival (1st Nov 1pm) is a touring programme dedicated to highlighting the history and culture of the American train tramp. The hobo is one of the iconic figures of American society wandering through the vastness of the continent looking for work; the heroic loser of the American dreamscape. John T. Davis’s outstanding documentary Hobo will be screened alongside seven short films capturing the gritty romance of this unique subculture.
The Phillipe Parreno Evening (2nd Nov 9.10pm) features two films by the French-Algerian artist to mark the opening of his major exhibition at IMMA, Phillipe Parreno: November (4 Nov – 24 Jan). The programme features Zidane, a 21st Century Portrait by Parreno and Douglas Gordon which creates a real-time portrait of Zidane in action using 17 cameras trained on his every movement on the pitch.
Visual Acoustics, presented in association with OFFSET (4th Nov 6.30pm) celebrates the life and work of the late Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer. Shulman captured all the major progressive architects since the 1930’s and his images epitomised and popularised the beauty of the Californian modernist movement.
Tickets and more details for all three events are available from the IFI Box Office, online at www.ifi.ie or by calling 01 679 3477.
