Campaign for a Festival Fringe in Belfast
Fringe Benefits Theatre Company recently spearheaded the campaign for a Festival Fringe in Belfast. Many worthy attempts have previously been made to establish a festival fringe to support and add to the Belfast Festival at QUB. Over 700 people and groups have already signed up to the Facebook Campaign and the petitions that were available at the ‘Belfast needs a Fringe’ event in St Georges Market in May 2009.
The Campaign group would like to invite representatives from across the Arts community to take part in a meeting at the Crescent Arts Centre on Saturday 13 February at 12.00pm. The aim of this meeting is to discuss the viability of a sustainable Festival available to the people of Belfast and further afield.
The next step would be to set up a Fringe Society representative of all the Arts - theatre, literature, storytelling, dance, music, comedy, film, etc which would then benefit both from in-house experience and from already proffered assistance and guidance from other Festival Organisers in Belfast and Dublin as well as a former member of the Edinburgh Fringe Society.
The aspiration - to begin with a mini Fringe Festival in Belfast on 14th - 17th October 2010 - and grow.
