Intense Intimacy: The Cinema of Claire Denis at the IFI
June 6th - 30th 2010
French director Claire Denis is one of the most critically acclaimed, original and distinctive cinematic voices of our time. The IFI and Watershed are delighted to present to audiences with a rare opportunity to see this remarkable director’s body of work. Intense Intimacy is a retrospective timed to mark the IFI release of her latest film White Material on Fri 2nd July and celebrate Denis’ sensual, evocative technique and complex, stunning films.
Born in France and raised in several African countries, Claire Denis is arguably the quintessential modern filmmaker. Tackling issues of race and sexuality, the colonial legacy and the disenfranchised in our society, her movies are just that – truly personal, wholly cinematic expressions rather than filmed plays or illustrated novels.
It seems the perfect moment to hold a retrospective as her latest film White Material takes Denis back to Africa, the setting of her 1988 debut Chocolat. In the intervening twenty-two years she has created an intimate, beautiful and poetic cinematic style that is sensual, evocative and attentive to even the smallest of details or the seemingly most insignificant of moments.
Denis has a profound, evident love for the cinema – and lovers of the cinema love Claire Denis. Whether you’re a familiar fan or just discovering her work the IFI hopes you can take advantage of this ideal opportunity to see the stunning films of one of the world’s most original filmmakers.
