Irish doc ‘Horses’ shortlisted for Grierson Award in UK

Liz Mermin’s documentary HORSES had been shortlisted for the Best Cinema Documentary award at the world renowned Grierson Awards which will take place in London on the 2nd November.

HORSES follows three promising, charismatic horses over the course of one rather difficult racing year. Beautiful, unusual, and highly entertaining, the film combines the drama of a sports movie with the exploration of an ancient human obsession, offering a subtle critique of humanity’s quirks on the side.

Produced by Aisling Ahmed for West Park Pictures, this innovative documentary has previously been officially selected for screening at the IFI Stranger Than Fiction Festival in Dublin, the Guth Gafa International Documentary Festival in Donegal as well as the Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival last year. It was co-financed by the IFB, RTÉ and BBC Storyville.

Ken Wardrop’s critically acclaimed His & Hers was shortlisted for an award at last year’s ceremony and has since gone on to accomplish international success.

Established in 1972, the Grierson Awards recognise and celebrate documentaries from Britain and abroad that have made a significant contribution to the genre and that demonstrate quality, integrity, creativity, originality and overall excellence.

The winners will be announced at the Grierson 2010 award ceremony, which will take place at the BFI Southbank, London on Tuesday 2nd November.
