‘Pyjama Girls’ at the IFI & season of work from Still Films

Sell-out documentary Pyjama Girls returns to the IFI alongside a supporting season of work from production company Still Films

Pyjama Girls, a new Irish documentary by Maya Derrington that examines the lives of two of Dublin’s ‘pyjama girls’, returns to the IFI for an exclusive release on the 20th August 2010. A huge hit at the IFI Stranger Than Fiction Festival where it premiered this April, the film sold out three times over with its uncompromising look at the lives of some of Dublin’s most vulnerable young people. The cinema release of the Pyjama Girls is accompanied by a look at Still Films, the unique and innovative production company behind some of the most intriguing work in the current rennaisance in Irish documentary making.

In a society that seems increasingly hard to shock, at least when it comes to fashion, public pyjama-wearing in Dublin stands out as a statement that still generates controversy, often being viewed as a uniform of anti-social behaviour. Pyjama Girls slips behind the confrontational facade to provide a fiercely intimate portrayal of Lauren and Tara, two teenagers from Ballyfermot, their families, friends, and the claustrophobic urban spaces they inhabit. Profound challenges of drugs, family breakdown, and social exclusion sometimes overwhelm the subjects but Derrington also finds a streak of defiant dignity in people struggling at the very margins of our society.

Still Films has a very collective ethos with the three founders Nicky Gogan, Maya Derrington and Paul Rowley all producing and editing for each other’s work as well as supporting a wide group of associated filmmakers. The IFI is delighted to also be hosting the world premiere of Paul Rowley and Tim Blue’s The Rooms, an experimental study of an abondoned world, the acclaimed Seaview about the asylum holding centre in the former Mosney holiday camp and a workshop with the three founders of Still Films who will discuss their collaborative practice and screen a selection of shorter films.
