Irish filmmaker Michael Lavelle shoots short for Berlin Today Award 2011

Irish filmmaker Michael Lavelle has wrapped production on his latest short film which was chosen as one of only five projects for the final of the Berlin Today Award 2011; the Berlinale Talent Campus’ short film competition.

Michael (whose cinematography credits include the IFTA winning His & Hers) produced the short together with the production company Macchiato Pictures Filmproduktion. “Directing a film under the banner of the Berlinale has opened the doors for me to collaborate with an incredibly talented group of people, and it’s a wonderful privilege to be making this film as part of such a passionate team,” commented the filmmaker. The shoot for the short took place in Berlin at Villa Herz (Havel Studios) close to the Wannsee Lake, amongst other locations. Michael will now edit the film in Germany.

Michael is no stranger to success having already shared the 2010 Sundance Film Festival cinematography award with Kate McCullough in the category of World Cinema – Documentary for their work on ‘His & Hers’. He was furthermore awarded the 2009 London International Film Festival Prize in the category of Best International Short Film for ‘Out of the Blue’ which also lead to both the Audience Award and Best First Short at the 2008 Cork International Film Festival. Out of the Blue was funded through the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film awards. For more info on this award visit www.filmbase.ie/awards.

150 young filmmakers from 55 countries entered projects under this year’s theme of ‘Leaving the familiar sector’. All five of the finalist projects are to be produced with support from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and in-kind contributions from the film industry until the end of 2010. The finalist films will have their world premiere during the Opening Ceremony of the Berlinale Talent Campus 2011 which takes place from February 12th to 17th 2011. The winning film will be selected by a jury of prominent filmmakers and will receive the Berlin Today Award.
