The Bealtaine Festival 2012
CELEBRATING CREATIVITY AS WE AGE
www.bealtaine.com

The Bealtaine Festival 2012 will be offering a great selection of cinematic experiences across the country during May.

The Bealtaine Film Tour will be screening An American in Paris, My House in Umbria, and Last Chance Harvey in venues around Ireland throughout the month of May. The tour is presented by access>CINEMA and the Irish Film Institute, with support from Seven Seas Active 55, and will be launched at the IFI on May 2nd at 11am.

The three films selected for the Bealtaine Film Tour this year are diverse in genre and were deliberately selected to appeal to the wide tastes of older audiences. My House In Umbria, based on the novella by William Trevor, takes place after a tragic train accident. Four survivors find solace in the villa of an English writer, Mrs Delahunty (Maggie Smith). As they struggle to come to terms with the disaster, an inspector tries to figure out exactly what happened. Last Chance Harvey, a romantic drama starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, focuses on two lonely people who tentatively forge a relationship over the course of three days. An American in Paris, directed by Vincente Minnelli and winner of six Academy Awards, is perhaps the greatest dance musical of all time, starring Gene Kelly as a young artist who finds love on Paris’ Left Bank to a glorious Gershwin score.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

Bealtaine is Ireland’s unique festival, celebrating creativity as we age, and is coordinated by Age & Opportunity.

2011 saw Bealtaine brokering and supporting nearly 600 organisers, producing over 3000 events nationwide – that is over 100 events a day! Approximately 125,000 people participated in the festival, which is inspiring similar events across the globe in Australia, as well as closer to home in Scotland and Wales.

In 2012 the festival is asking “What kind of old do YOU want to be?” and “What kind of world do you want to grow older in?” Bealtaine 2012 will see hundreds of theatrical, cinematic, craft, photographic, choral, dance and other events taking place across Ireland, giving people a chance to explore these issues and celebrate creativity as we age.

Age & Opportunity is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes opportunities for greater participation by older people in society through partnerships and collaborative programmes. Age & Opportunity is developing the model established by the Bealtaine festival in global settings, following invitations from Age Cymru in Wales, with Creative Scotland and Arts and Health Australia.

The Model Sligo Cinema Programme May - June

the-model-cinema

THE MODEL ANNOUNCES ITS FORTHCOMING CINEMA PROGRAMME (MAY – JUNE)

May is upon us and for the start of the summer season The Model presents a fresh cinema programme jam packed with stunning foreign films and enthralling real life documentaries.
The programme includes; ‘’Tiny Furniture’’, ‘’Le Havre’’, ‘’Into the Abyss’’, ‘’Delicacy’’, ‘’Jeff Who Lives at Home’’, ‘’Headhunters (Hodejegerne)’’, ‘’Marley’’ and ‘’Ratatouille’’.

Amongst the highlights of the programme is Kevin Macdonald’s “Marley”, an expansive portrait of the reggae legend Bob Marley seen through the eyes of those closest to him using in depth interviews and live vivid authentic footage. Compelling and informative, it is a must see for reggae fans and novices alike.

Director Werner Herzogs’ string of successful documentaries continues with the engrossing, “Into the Abyss”. This intense and impartial documentary examines the true story of two teenage Texans convicted of murder back in 2000. Harrowingly raw it includes intense interviews with the murderers themselves. It has been described as a profound and serious film which casts a poetic, philosophical gaze over the remnants of heinous crime and the death penalty.

The beautifully shot Parisian “Delicacy” and Pixar’s animated “Ratatouille” will be shown to coincide with the SÓ Sligo Food Festival. “Ratatouille” a food filled adventurous tale will be fun for all the family with a drawing and colouring activity area for kids at the screening on May 20th. Family tickets (2 adults and 2 children only €15).

Kicking off the season next week is the sharp debut from writer/director and lead role Lena Dunham in “Tiny Furniture” Wednesday May 02 at 6.15pm. Dunham at 23 won SXSW’s narrative feature prize since this film has been commissioned to write a series for HBO.

You can pick up The Model Cinema programme in outlets around Sligo Town and is also available to view online on The Model website, www.themodel.ie/film or by calling the box office on 071-9141405.

Tim Burton Season at The Light House Cinema

tim_burton_beetlejuice

In advance of the release of Dark Shadows, the Light House Cinema will be taking a nostalgic look at the early work of Tim Burton with two Double Bills – Pee Wee’s Big Adventure/Beetlejuice and a Johnny Depp Double Bill – Edward Scissorhands/Ed Wood.

The world of Tim Burton is as colourful as it is dark and as eccentric as it is accessible. We hope you’ll join us over the bank holiday weekend for some escapism at its most aesthetically pleasing.

PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE – Sunday, 6th May – 6.30pm

Burton’s first feature length film and certainly his most under-seen, although Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is a children’s film, it is as strange and unsettling as any of Burton’s later work. Oddly likeable man-child Pee Wee Herman’s cross-country adventure is hugely imaginative, wonderful to look at and full of the quirk and stylistic nuances that would become Tim Burton’s trademark.

BEETLEJUICE – Sunday 6th May – 8.30pm

Burton’s first bona fide Hollywood hit, starring Michael Keaton as the most vile, uncontrollable “bio-exorcist” you could ever have the misfortunate of being haunted by. With a career-best turn from Michael Keaton, ably supported by Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. Beetlejuice deals with tragedy and despair in that ghoulish but light-hearted way that only Tim Burton can pull off.

*Audiences member are permitted to “shake shake shake senora” where appropriate.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS – Monday 7th May – 6.30pm

The first film in one of the great actor/director partnerships of all time, here Burton convinces teen idol Johnny Depp to cover up his face, mess up his hair and dress up in S&M gear to bring us a story about a gentle man, made by a lonely inventor, who died before he could give him real hands. Edward Scissorhands is one the most beloved of Tim Burton’s films and balances his two loves, 1960’s pastiche and gothic aesthetic quite comfortably.

ED WOOD – Monday May 7th – 8.30pm

After years of taking inspiration from 1950’s B-movies, Tim Burton decided to pay direct homage to one of the most notorious figures from the annals of cult film, Ed Wood, bad director extraordinaire whose Plan 9 From Outer Space is commonly referred to as “the worst film ever made”. Far from making Ed Wood the butt of a joke, Tim Burton and his star Johnny Depp lovingly create a character whose ambition, passion and vision knows no bounds, except unfortunately his own lack of talent.
