On the death of groundbreaking animator Jimmy T. Murakami
Academy Award-nominated animator
This weekend saw the passing of the Academy Award-nominated animator, director and painter Jimmy T. Murakami, the man behind such seminal works as The Magic Pear Tree, When the Wind Blows and The Snowman.
Murakami was born in California to Japanese parents, but he spent many years living and working in Ireland. The Irish Film Board was delighted to work with Jimmy on the animated short films Sparky the Space Dog (2005) and Sandpiper (2008), both of which can be watched in full on our Media Hub.
James Hickey, CEO of the Irish Film Board, commented: “Jimmy was a wonderful man and a huge inspiration to all working in animation in Ireland. His creative talent as a director of animation was at all times world class, and his death is a great loss. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Ethna, his children and his grandchildren.”
