ShortSpace: January 2012

7pm Thursday 5th January
Theme: “First Fortnight “

For the January 2012 session we took a bit of a departure from the norm to link in with the excellent First Fortnight Festival which takes place during the first two weeks in January. The festival is an arts-based mental health awareness project that began as a live music gig preceded by a public mental health symposium in the daytime, to being two weeks of visual arts, music, talks and of course film!

Mental health prejudice and discrimination can do more lasting harm to people than a period of low mood or self harm. An awareness campaign in the First Fortnight of the year works because we are all a little raw that time of year and more likely to be open to an empathic response. First Fortnight Festival plans to make the first two weeks of every year synonymous with mental health awareness to help end discrimination, prejudice and social stigma.

To tie in with the festival we partnered with the IFI to offer a selection of Irish short films that deal with a whole variety of mental health issues. As always, there was a chance to talk to the filmmakers involved after the screening.
