For the first edition of ShortSpace we decided to talk to a number of filmmakers about their first time making a short film. We were delighted to have filmmakers Vincent Gallagher, Juanita Wilson, Thomas Hefferon and Hugh O’Conor in attendance on the night to talk about their experiences making their first short films. Below is a list of the shorts that were screened on the night.

The Door

An Cosc

12 min | colour | Irish with English subtitles | 2009 Written by Hugh Travers Directed by Vincent Gallagher Produced by Claire McCaughley

Based on true events, An Cosc explores the bizarre and humorous story of two childhood friends from opposite sides of town who share a voracious passion for hurling and mutual raillery. When local pride and sporting politics interfere, it sparks a bitter fall-out that divides a community, and has unforeseen consequences for the first President of the country. (Best in Festival, Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival)

The Confession

4 min | colour | English | 2008 Written, Directed & Produced by Thomas Hefferon The Confession is set in 1970’s rural Ireland, and is about a young man’s attempt to confess his sins to the local priest, who seems more interested in gossiping about the local women than absolving him of his sins. (Screened at numerous festivals internationally and received nation-wide release with Irish feature A Film With Me In It)

ShortSpace Submissions:

  • Filmbase accepts short film submissions for ShortSpace in all genres (drama, documentary, animation, experimental)
  • To submit your film please email the ShortSpace programmer for more details on clare@filmbase.ie
  • Please note that submitting your film does not guarantee inclusion in the programme
  • Ideally shorts should be ten minutes or under films. Films over 30 minutes will not be accepted.

    • ShortSpace at Filmbase takes place in the Basement Space on the first Thursday of every month however this is subject to change. Details will be posted on the website.
