Writing & Rewriting Short Films
2 Day intensive course
Sat & Sun - 30th June & 1st July
Making a great short film scheme is a springboard to a career in feature films, documentaries and television drama. However, most entries for short film schemes contain a good idea in a sketchy draft. This course will give the creative team behind the idea the skills to hone a screenplay. This will give it the best chance of being made and being effective once it is made.
There will be expert guidance in crafting short films to the standard sought by Bord Scann‡n/Irish Film Board and other funders. The course is designed to improve participants chances of being selected for any short film scheme and then making the best film possible. Participants will be shown how to develop an idea from conception to production-ready script, while avoiding the most common pitfalls.
COURSE AIM:
There will be one introductory lecture to put this work in context, on creating dramatic tension across the span of a film. Then there will be a mix of theory and practical exercises, applicable to works-in-progress. This course is highly recommended for filmmakers who propose to apply for short film awards this year.
COURSE CONTENT:
- Examining what makes short films effective
- Looking at the narrative drive in short films.
- How to rewrite: is this version better or just different?
- Orchestrating the shape of a short film
- Finding a visual correlative for the theme of a short film.
TUTOR:
Mary Kate O Flanagan is an award-winning screenwriter who also works as a script consultant with writers and producers internationally. She trained to teach screenwriting using the Frank Daniel approach with David Howard, author of The Tools of Screenwriting and How to Build a Great Screenplay and Martin Daniel, Professor of Screenwriting at USC.
Testimonials
Mary Kate O Flanaghan's course in Filmbase is one of the best courses I have ever attended. Over a weekend, I learned how to write a short film- 'Patsy Dick' which ultimately got funding and was made late last year. It was Mary Kate's skill as a teacher and script editor that shaped my original script into what it has become. It was also where I met my producer as well as making connections with other industry professionals. I cannot recommend it highly enough".
"Before this course I had been writing for years but didn't seem to be able to make the jump to the next level. This course not only helped me with my short film scripts but also opened the doors for me to get paid work writing on feature scripts."
