Thursday 4th May, 6pm

The Irish Red Cross in partnership with UCC are hosting an event here in Filmbase. As part of this, we are screening a short documentary film “On Shifting Ground” – Storytelling in Nepal: about the disaster relief efforts of development organisations in Nepal, following the 2015 earthquake.

This will be followed by an open discussion on the challenges and issues faced by humanitarian organisations following natural disasters.
On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. The earthquake and aftershocks killed over 8,000 people and injured more than 21,000. Among those who mobilised staff and resources in the world’s response to this disaster were six Hilton Prize Coalition member organisations that were embedded in Nepal – BRAC, Handicap International, Heifer International, HelpAge, Operation Smile and SOS Children’s Villages. Nine months after the disaster, these organisations came together under the Hilton Prize Coalition Storytelling Programme to share their experiences before, during, and immediately following the earthquake.
This documentary film screening and discussion provides an opportunity for the humanitarian and development communities to rethink conventional approaches to disaster relief and offer next steps on the collaboration necessary to respond efficiently and effectively.
